Americans have a reputation for liking meat and potatoes, so you can find many American recipes that include both. Many of these dishes are hamburger recipes. Hamburger meat, or ground beef, is popular because it’s inexpensive, it’s easy to cook, and it’s very versatile. Another plus is that it’s easy to eat, so kids usually love any type of hamburger recipes.
This recipe is really tasty, and it’s a great way to use leftover mashed potatoes. Of course, if you happen to have leftover mashed potatoes, you’ll have to whip up a batch. You can use instant mashed potatoes, but if you do, the casserole won’t be quite as good.
Hamburger and Potatoes Casserole recipe
Ingredients:
- 5 or 6 baking potatoes
- Milk
- Butter or margarine
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 pounds ground beef
- ½ cup diced onion
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 ½ – 2 cups grated mild cheddar cheese
Directions: Peel and dice potatoes and boil until just fork tender. Drain cooked potatoes in a colander and mash. Stir in milk, butter, salt, and pepper to make slightly stiff mashed potatoes. Set aside.
Brown ground beef and onions until meat is done. Drain away fat and add garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
Spread half of ground beef mixture into the bottom of a deep baking dish and top with half the mashed potatoes. Repeat layers with the remaining meat and potatoes. Evenly distribute cheese on top.
Bake for 20-25 minutes at 375 degrees.
